Community Pot Project 2019/20: BANES 3SG

At the beginning of 2020 we invited organisations across B&NES to apply for our Community Pot fund. BANES 3SG received funding and has recruited a coordinator to support and train the 1,900 volunteers who offered their support during COVID-19.

3SG are delighted to have received funding for our Compassionate Community Coordinator from the Healthwatch Community Fund. We have been able to recruit a candidate and set a date for our first Conector training which is aimed at transitioning volunteers recruited for COVID-19 into longer terms community support.

James Carlin, Director, BANES 3SG

Bath & North East Somerset Third Sector Group (BANES 3SG) is an independent membership network supporting the charity, social enterprise, faith and voluntary sector operating in Bath and North East Somerset.

The aim of their Bath based charity is to raise the profile of their members, provide 1-1 support and give them a chance to influence local strategic decision making.

COVID-19

During the COVID-19 emergency they recruited 1,900 Compassionate Community Connectors in ten days to help signpost local people to help them to find the services they needed during the lockdown.

As a result of this they urgently needed to employ a volunteer coordinator to be able to support number of volunteers who had come forward and to provide them with training and the necessary DBS checks as quickly as possible.

The aim is that all of their volunteers will have gone through virtual training so they have accurate knowledge about local services they can signpost people to.

The aim of the project

This is once in a generation opportunity to train an army of volunteers and provide them with the skills to become knowledgeable and passionate connectors who can support residents in BANES for years ahead.

BANES 3SG want to:

  • provide virtual training,
  • ensure safeguarding checks are carried out,
  • develop volunteer handbook, and
  • employ a coordinator to manage the connectors
